Obituary of John Martin Larsen

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

John Martin Larsen, 82, of Boonton, NJ, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, February 26, 2024.

John was born in the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn, NY in January 1942, to Thordis & Karl Larsen. John lived on 59th Street in Bay Ridge until he was 15 years old.  The family then moved to Sunset Trail in Lake Telemark, NJ and he graduated from Morris Hills High School in Rockaway.  After graduation, John started working as a blueprint machine operator for Marotta Valve in Boonton Township. It was there he met the love of his life, Barbara.

He began his career as a men’s haberdasher in 1966 at Bob’s Men Shop in Boonton. John loved the town of Boonton and loved to advocate for all that it is. John decided to become an entrepreneur and on Labor Day weekend in 1983, he opened his own shop on Main Street in Boonton: John Larsen – Clothier. He later added a second location in Mendham. John enjoyed working with his sons in the business.

The stores closed their doors in 2000, but John could not sit still and worked at several other department stores in his so-called retirement.

John is survived by his beautiful, devoted wife of 60 years, Barbara (Friedman) Larsen; his loving sons, Edward (Roseanne), Richard, and Andrew (Tracy); his adoring grandchildren, Briannah, Sarah, Justin, Alyssa, Cody and Kaydence; his cherished brothers, Ronald (Susan) of Schenectady, NY, and Karl (Laureen) of Fort Myers, FL; and his loving niece and nephews.

Please visit the family on Thursday, February 29th from 4:00 - 7:00pm at Codey & Mackey Funeral Home of Boonton.  A Prayer Service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, March 1st, followed by the burial at Greenwood Cemetery in Boonton at 11:30am.
